Lonely corner
I watch the wild geese fly,
Long necks stretched out
Against a winter sunset sky,
I listen to their echoed cry.
Shades of darkness, lingering light,
Above the city’s grimy streets,
Give definition to their flight
To find their refuge for the night.
It’s here:
an almost
forgotten
corner of
Forest Park
mostly
obliterated
by the inter-
section of
US 40 and
Kingshighway.
It generated
quite a bit of
controversy
just 2 years
ago when the
Board of Aldermen of the City of St. Louis gave a 99 year lease on most of it to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This action on the part of City government provoked the citizens of the city to pass by referendum a law that prohibits the City government from selling or leasing any park land without the approval of the electorate.
It is still part of Forest Park and still has tennis courts, playground, strange monoliths and racket ball courts to play on. Plus you can see the wild geese fly! Check it out.
