Friedrich Jahn
Today I ventured along the eastern slope of Art Hill with a particular mission. I discovered in previous rambles an interesting monument tucked away there along the western edge of Post-Dispatch lake. You are familiar with the Turners, aren’t you? No, not Ike & Tina, I’m talking about the gymnastic organization. It was a 19th century movement that came out of Germany and was organized by a man named Friedrich Jahn. One of his goals was to strengthen and unite Germany into one nation, and to advance democratic ideals. His motive in founding his athletic organization was to strengthen body and mind while bringing Germans of all classes together.
You can see his bronze bust brooding over this vision atop the memorial erected by the Turners in 1915 on the site of the German pavilion for the 1904 Worlds Fair. Here ya go.
