Bowl Lake & aviator
I had just finished my little expedition around Bowl Lake (that’s the pond next to the ramp from southbound Kingshighway onto westbound US40, which is, in case you didn’t know, currently closed), and was heading home through the park when I saw a man on the athletic fields with what I thought was a fishing pole.
“That’s a strange sight” I told myself, “He can’t be catching much”. Then I saw his plane fly by.
“That’s no fishing pole, that’s a radio remote control!” I stopped my car, hopped out and hustled over to get a photo. I wish I had one of those things when I was a kid!
Bowl Lake is down the hill to the east of the Science Center Planetarium and is a great place to sit and ponder or stand and wander. A crumbling stone bridge over a small stream (water courtesy of the City of St. Louis Water Department) gives it charm and atmosphere (not to mention additional wetness). In the summer one can frequently find children playing in the water as well as assorted waterfowl floating contentedly on the lake’s smooth surface. Not today.
