Day 324 - a year in Forest Park

- photography & writing by Edward Crim

Sunshine in my life.

Ding, dong, the rain is gone, the wicked rain is gone!

I danced with the munchkins today (figuratively speaking) in celebration of the prodigal’s return. Everything seemed brighter today (there was a good reason for that) even though the ground still made squishy noises under my feet  (As I climbed the north side of the central fields, I heard a rustling sound in the grass; pausing to listen, I realized I was hearing the sound of water running down the bank under the grass).

Fishermen stood hopefully around Jefferson Lake. In the Steinberg wild area, kingfishers chattered and the ducks floated serenely in the midst of the channel. I first heard the crows as I walked up the hill toward the upper Muny parking lot. I wasn’t certain what the cause of the ruckus was, but it didn’t take long to find the hawk (I think it’s a juvenile Cooper’s hawk) in their midst. He stuck around for a while, but eventually gave up on having crow for dinner and took off toward the north side of the park.

Completing my circle at Jefferson Lake, I was approached by waterfowl looking for a handout. Following the mallards on the lake were two pied-billed grebes and shortly after that, dear readers, the sun set on America’s premier urban park. And I’ve got the photos to prove it.
