Day 340 - a year in Forest Park

Family outing

It did warm up a bit today (though it doesn’t feel like it now, as I sit at my desk and type - it’s about 52 in here), so I bundled my family (as much as I have at home at the moment) into the car and headed to Forest Park, the best darn 2 square miles in the whole midwest. Parking on Government Drive in the Kennedy Forest, we set off to seek adventure. It was a quiet sort of adventure, suitable for family, the highlight of the afternoon being the chasing of the geese. Who knows, it might have been the highlight of their afternoon as well.

Goose 1 “Lands’ sake, child, that human that came runnin’ at us so, flappin’ his arms - well I never!”

Goose 2 “It’s a mercy we weren’t all killed right there!” Goose 3 “They say that those humans actually eat geese!”

Goose 2 “Well, I swannee, when he opened up his mouth and I saw all those fearsome teeth, I like to fainted!”

Goose 3 “But it wasn’t anywhere near as exciting as the coyote that got grandpa!”

Geese 1 & 2 in unison “You hush now, you hear?”

Goose 1 “It’s bad luck to talk about such things!”

Goose 2 “ That’s right! Let’s not talk about such things!”

While I didn’t actually hear words from the geese as they flew off, the loud honking certainly conveyed their indignant consternation. Then there were the dabbling ducks, the owls that weren’t there (at least I couldn’t find them) and the mysterious woods. You just gotta see.
