Day 127 - a year in Forest Park

Red car in green ditch

Forest Park really is a happening place! The placement of the car in the ditch apparently happened Tuesday night, though it was today that I found out about it. When I first saw that bright red mini van in one of my favorite green spots, I thought (just for an instant, mind you) that it was an art installation of the Modern sort (A la Laumeier) Then I saw the police officer and the unhappy owner of the car in the creek (he told me it was an accident, though he didn’t explain how such an accident occurred). It turned out to be performance art of a sort (unintentional on the part of the participants), with the owner, policeman, park ranger, tow truck driver, park workers and me all providing entertainment for the passersby (who quite naturally speculated out loud on the cause of the accident).

But all was not unhappiness in the park today; busloads of excited schoolchildren were there to visit our great zoo and wonderful art museum (imagine the fun of running through the hushed galleries with your giggling friends, pursued by panting, shouting and gesticulating guards). Birds sat patiently on their nests, or herded their little ones carefully away from the human with the camera. An aviator flew his sail plane on the athletic fields, busy workers prepared the site for Shakespeare to make his appearance in Our Beloved Park, and Mockingbird nestlings patiently awaited the return of their mother. Yea, Forest Park!

Oh, yes, photos.
