Into the night
It’s hard to see what is what in the photo above (it was dark, OK?). I was across Post-Dispatch lake from the World’s Fair pavilion (chasing owls), when I looked across the water at a light whose movements caught my eye. I saw (rather dimly) the man on the right with a light on his head guiding the man on the left as they poked in the water with a stick of some sort (this photo was taken at ISO 3200, 400mm lens, 1/20 sec, f5.6, hand held).
“Frog gigging” I observed to Austen and Mark Glenshaw (whom we had come across just a little while previously). I thought about calling a ranger, but previous experience has indicated to me that they aren’t concerned about poaching, so I let the thought pass.
Yesterday was the opening night of this year’s Muny shows (42nd Street is playing now), and Muny Madness was in full swing! We loitered briefly by the colonnade before traipsing through the Deer Lake wild area and over to the fish hatchery. We checked on several nests, just to see how the little ones were doing (we were roundly scolded by the mama birds), and saw a muskrat swimming to its den with a mouthful of grass. All the time we hunted the park for the treasures of nature, a constant stream of theater goers flowed into the park. Cars lined both sides of all the roads leading to and from the Muny and there were people everywhere. But you way want to see what we found.
