On the subject of lenses
Today I got up early and toting my usual triumvirate of high-falutin’, photon catchin’, 21st century gizmos, I went off to The Park for to snag the sunrise. Now when I go out shooting in America’s premier urban park, I usually take three lenses with me (in photo speak it’s “glass”, as in “Nice glass, man.” “Yeah, this glass gives real good bokeh.”) The much maligned but extremely practical Canon EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6, the Canon EF 24-105 f4 (very popular with wedding photographers) and the Olympus 50 mm f3.5 macro* (these were the three I used today, in fact). Of the 226 lead images I’ve produced this year, about 170 were made with one of these three lenses. Other lenses I’ve used include the Canon 16-35 f2.8 (12 photos), 70-200 f2.8 (10 photos), 28 f1.8 (12 photos), 50 f 1.4 (5 photos), 100 f2 (1 photo), and 400 f2.8 (2 photos). Check here to see if you can tell which of my main three lenses I used for each photo.
* the Canon EOS system is unique among film/digital systems in that it allows the normal use (still able to focus to infinity) of other manufacturer’s 35mm lenses (with an adapter and without auto focus). I use my old (about 30 years) Olympus specialty lenses for macro work.
